Hubs, Switches, Routers

Network hubs, which are pretty much obsolete, had to play by the rules of Ethernet Repeaters, and therefore have tricky restrictions on lengths of network segments and typically lots of problems with signal latency on anything larger than a very small network. A switch is faster and a great deal more intelligent about routing, and addressing. A switch breaks up segments to allow for much more complex and larger networks.
Managed Switches, can be controlled to a much higher degree, allowing bandwidth limitation, more complex routing, and the ability to turn off ports and therefore sections of the network.
SFP Modules are the new way of adding flexibility to Ethernet Switches. SFP ports can contain RJ45 Copper based slots, or Various Fiber Connectors which can be changed for future compatibility.
