High Definition Media Interface (HDMI) Switchers are for high definition video and multi-channel surround audio. Switchers allow you to connect multiple sources, HD set-top boxes, BluRay DVD players and game consoles to a single display. Matrix switches provide the flexibility of sending multiple sources to multiple displays. You can place the switch in the equipment rack and run a single HDMI cable to the display.
Most come with an Infrared Remote control and some have RS232 control ports for integrating them into a computer-controlled system. The pros for HDMI are they have audio and video signals in a single cable, the connector is compact and the signals are all digital. The cons are High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), connector is delicate and sources and displays both have to be HDMI. HDMI is backward compatible with DVI equipment and displays, simple use a HDMI to DVI cable to make the connection. However, digital audio is not passed on a DVI cable connection and a separate audio connection is required.
