Multi-mode fiber is a type of optical fiber used to transmit Ethernet packets optically over glass fiber cable at data rates of 10 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s over lengths of up to 600 meters, much longer than the copper maximum of 100 meters, but far short of Single mode fibers length capabilities. You must use Multi-mode cable with multi mode Fiber Connections.

Single-mode fiber is a special optical fiber designed to carry a single ray of light (mode), single-mode fibers can have a higher bandwidth than multi-mode fibers, data rates of up to 10 gigabits per second were possible at distances of over 60 km. You must use Single-mode cable with single mode Fiber Connections.

SFP - Small form-factor pluggable transceiver, is a standardized modular insert for Fiber optic Networking that contains an optical transceiver and terminates in Standard Fiber connectors. This allows Switches with SFP Slots to be easily upgraded or modified to have different types of Fiber optic Network connections.
