Solid conductor or Stranded Conductor
Use Stranded cable for Patch Cables and Solid Conductor for Infrastructure and in-wall installation. Why? Stranded cable is very flexible and is able to withstand much more flexing before damage. Solid conductor has superior electrical characteristics, but the connections will be damaged with flexing. In addition to this, Solid conductor wires require different types of contacts for a good connection. This type of contact is only available in special RJ45 plugs. Normal RJ45 plugs are made for stranded wires and normal RJ45 Keystone jacks are made for solid conductors.
Do I need Plenum Cable?
Plenum cables emit less toxic fumes when heated or burned and burn at higher temperatures. Your local regulations mandate where you need to use plenum cables. If in doubt contact your local Fire Marshall. When in doubt use plenum, especially in spaces that could possibly be seen as air circulation spaces such as above ceiling tiles. Err on the cautious side or the Fire Marshall may make you rip it out and replace it!
