Digital signals are harder to extend then analog signals. Without signal reconditioning, conversion for other transmission medium or heavier gauge cable with with extremely tight specs you cannot reliably have high resolutions at long lengths.
Recommendations for circumstances:
Fixed Installation (Home Theater): This is a good place to save money by going to a equalized or boosted cable. Cables with on-board Equalization are the best value, but cannot be upgraded by replacing the signal booster/Equalizer.
Temporary Installation (Trade Shows/Conferences) : When an installation must be taken down and put up again somewhere else on a frequent basis, then the best possible choice is a CAT5 extension solution. The CAT5 cables used for the cable extension are relatively inexpensive and widely available; in fact you can make your own in a pinch. The thing that will break down first in these settings are the cables, so make them inexpensive and easy to replace.
Nasty Environment Installation : Some types of trade shows or permanent installations are a nightmare of RF noise and AC ground loop power problems. The best solution for harsh environments is certainly to use Fiber Optic extension cables with Fiber converters.
