Connector gender is determined to be "male" or "female" not by the way they, (the connectors) themselves mate, but by their contacts. So the connector which inserts inside the other connector is actually female (female contacts) , and the connector being inserted into is male, because the contacts are male.

Easy example:

Male	Female

The male has "pins" which stick out, while the female has holes, or "receptacle" contacts.

Tricky example:

Male	Female

What defines this as "male" is the "tongue" which contains the contacts sticks out, the female has a slot.
