Connector gender is determined to be "male" or "female" not by the way they, (the connectors) themselves mate, but by their contacts. So the connector which inserts inside the other connector is actually female (female contacts) , and the connector being inserted into is male, because the contacts are male.
Easy example:

What defines this as "male" is the "tongue" which contains the contacts sticks out, the female has a slot
