Video:
For High Definition Video from a Blu Ray Player, you need to connect it with either HDMI or Component Video Cables. Any other connection for video is not high definition.
Audio:
Audio is a bit tricky. In the best case scenario, HDMI is all you need, but that requires your Receiver to either be able to accept audio over HDMI and do something with it*. If you don't have HDMI inputs, then a Digital Coax cable or Optical Toslink digital Audio cable is another choice. These cannot give you Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master audio, but will give you excellent quality Digital audio, with up to twice the resolution of DVD.
The other choice besides HDMI that can give you Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master audio is multichannel cables. To use these you need to check the Blu Ray player has multichannel outputs and the Receiver has multichannel inputs.
*To confuse matters a bit, there are several levels of HDMI audio support in receivers/processors. The newest receivers can decode bitstream output from the Blu Ray player and decode the Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master audio signals. Slightly older receivers can accept Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master audio over LPCM only after it is decoded by the player. The worst case scenario is when the receiver just passes through the HDMI signal or switches it, but is incapable of doing anything with it. In that case you need an additional Coax, Toslink or multichannel connection for audio.
