DVI to HDMI - What you should know
There is no such thing as a DVI-I to HDMI cable. HDMI only supports digital video, so any DVI to HDMI cable is, by definition, a DVI-D to HDMI cable.
The Digital Video portion of DVI cables are compatible with HDMI cables, so when connecting DVI devices to HDMI or Vice Versa, you don't need to worry so much about the cable as a compatibility factor, instead you have to consider the video signal formats themselves. In other words the output devices resolution/refresh rates must be supported by the input device. Outputting 1280x1024@75Hz over DVI from a computer to an HDMI input on an HDTV that accepts only normal HDTV resolutions through that input, is not going to work at all. On the other hand, outputting 1080i from a DVD, Set top box or Blu Ray player with an HDMI output, into the DVI input of a LCD Display monitor that is meant for a PC or Mac, will generally not work either. In this case there are two reasons; signal format incompatibility and HDCP copy protection.
Rules:
DVI to HDMI - Make sure the output format from the source device is supported by the HDMI Display.
HDMI to DVI - Make sure the output format from the source device is supported by the DVI Display. Make sure both are HDCP compliant
HDMI Version issues There are many versions of HDMI, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 a and b. Because DVI is video only, and most newer versions of HDMI add various audio capabilities, there is usually not a lot to be concerned about. The main concerns should be long length support for high resolutions. Incompatibilities are generally not cable related but are instead compatibility issues between devices. Most common are HDCP incompatibility issues. The other common issue is using poor quality cabling at long lengths. If you see "sparkles" (pixels of strange colors where they do not belong) then you have a cable quality issue, a device weak output issue or a input device signal recovery issue. In any case you would need either a better cable, a booster/equalizer or some kind of long length solution like a CAT5 cable or fiber optic cable solution.
