How to choose Bulk Speaker Cable.
Before choosing you need to know that the gauge (AWG) of a cable is inversely proportional to size. 8AWG is really, really big. 30AWG is really, really tiny.
[What you should care about] The main reason for choosing a larger gauge wire is to not waste power. The main factors involved in power loss are: Gauge of the wire, Impedance (ohm rating) of the speaker, and the Length of the cable. So, when do you need a higher gauge? If the Speaker impedance is lower than normal, say 4 ohms as opposed to 8 ohms - you need a heavier gauge. For longer lengths - you need a heavier gauge. With a 25 foot 16AWG cable you will lose over 8% of your power with a 4 ohm speaker load - and under 4% with a 12AWG cable. With the cost of power today, every bit of efficiency helps.

[Controversial geeky stuff] Zip cord parallel wires tend to have higher Inductance than the more expensive twisted pair or twisted quad cables. If the overall inductance grows too high, the very high frequencies usually tend to start getting rolled off. This is hugely dependant on the speakers and amps they are connected to, and to put it in perspective, it usually amounts to tenths of decibels or less.
