First - you have to decide on if you need just Audio and Mic inputs or those with the addition of MIDI, or even something more exotic.
Second, how many Mic and line inputs outputs and how many will you need to work simultaneously, how many, if any, MIDI inputs do you need?
Third, do you want an external controller with programmable faders and other controls.
Fourth, do you want internal or external? This is usually a case of finding the input/output connectivity attributes listed above and choosing, rather than choosing internal or external. Then again,for newbies, external is usually the easiest way to get started.
